HIF44 vs HS-Series — What's Different?
The HIF (Horizontal Integral Float) series introduced an integral float chamber built into the carburettor body, replacing the external bowl of the HS-series. This made the HIF44 more compact and better suited to emission-controlled vehicles. It also introduced a temperature-compensating bi-metal bi-metallic jet assembly and a different needle retention system. These differences mean HIF44 refurbishment parts are not interchangeable with HS-series components — always specify HIF44 when ordering.
HIF44 Refurbishment Parts
- HIF44 Major Repair Kit — full gasket, O-ring and seal set for the HIF44 body and integral float chamber. The correct starting point for any refurbishment.
- HIF44 Needles — the HIF44 uses a biased needle with an off-centre clip. Standard fitment needles include BAF, BBT, BCH and others depending on application and state of tune.
- HIF44 Jet Assembly — includes the bi-metal temperature-compensating assembly. Replace if the jet has worn oval or the compensation mechanism is faulty.
- HIF44 Piston & Suction Chamber — the piston must move freely without side-play. Wear or damage here causes hunting and erratic mixture.
- Float & Needle Valve — integral to the HIF44 body. The float controls fuel level in the integral chamber; a worn needle valve causes flooding.
- Throttle Spindle Kit — HIF44 spindle bushes wear and allow air leaks that are impossible to compensate by adjustment alone.
- Damper & Damper Oil — correct damper oil is essential for smooth piston lift. Use only the correct viscosity as specified for HIF-series carburettors.
Common HIF44 Faults Addressed by Refurbishment
- Hunting idle: Usually worn jet, air leak at spindle, or incorrect idle mixture setting
- Rich running: Worn float needle valve, incorrect needle profile or jet worn oval
- Flat spot on acceleration: Faulty or low-on-oil damper, or sticking piston
- Fuel leak: Failed O-rings at jet housing, or cracked integral float chamber
- Cold-start problems: Faulty temperature-compensating bi-metal or incorrect needle
